With so much innovation-text flying around, what is the need for more text? For example see this blog on sources of innovation… As it is I/P Updates: CEOs Looking to Extermal Sources for Innovation - News and Information for Intellectual Property Practitioners According to IBM’s “Global CEO Study 2006,” 76% of the 750 of CEOs and business leaders interviewed for the study ranked business partner and customer collaboration as top sources for new ideas. This greatly contrasts with internal R&D, which ranked eighth as a source for new ideas — cited by only 14% of CEOs. However, only 51% say their organizations currently collaborate extensively. I feel it is important to focus on other end of the innovation chain -where innovating ideas are fleshed out and resources get allocated. It is important to analyze innovations in the context the following frames -macro socio-regulatory-economic scene -enterprise realities -value generation by market offering Most companies do not establish such frames with result that adhoc decisions rule. Techies from IT world keep on spewing out such enticing words from time to time. It is rare to find true time busting collaboration that demolishes functional silos in companies. When it comes big companies and their product creation programs R & D, Marketing, engineering, manufacturing, sales and all other people appear to be from different planets. So when for its new 787, Boeing does something radically different and involves not just its own people but vendors across the continents it is very heartening. Take a look Boeing and Art of Global Collaboration That collaboration is essential for complex products and for crashing launch cycle times is known. There are several challenges one -a conceptual framework that creates processes and structures to support collaboration two -technology three -mindset of people four -last but not the least setting dramatically stimulating and worthwhile goals The roles of a top leader, an architect / cheerleader / visionary rolled into one, a mentor and a coach who provides the conceptual framework become critical for a product creation process that has dramatic output.
